Description
Academic Year The Academic Year Program in Japanese Language and Culture allows students to participate for two semesters, with the option of continuing into the summer. The curriculum for both fall and spring (winter) semesters is made up of a 10-credit Japanese language course and one 3 or 4 credit elective course. The Fall Semester runs the first week in September until the second week in December, and the Spring (Winter) Semester runs the first week in January until the second week in April. Intensive Japanese language is taught at four different levels, from beginning to advanced. No prior Japanese language study is necessary. Japanese language courses are 10 credits, covering a standard academic year's worth of material in one semester. Placement tests given at the beginning of the program are used to determine the appropriate level for each student. More information on the four levels may be found on the Japanese Language Course Academics page. Elective courses are taught in English, either at JCMU or the neighboring Shiga University and University of Shiga Prefecture, and cover a range of Japanese culture related topics. More information on these courses, including syllabi, may be found on the Elective Course Academics page. Beyond classroom training, JCMU students are able to apply their increasing language skills in the local community and throughout Japan. Field trips, demonstrations, and other activities, whether organized by the JCMU staff or initiated by students, complement language study. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Summer Intensive Language Program The Summer Intensive Japanese Language Program is designed for students who want to concentrate on Japanese language study while experiencing life in Japan. The curriculum for this 9-week program is made up of a 10-credit Japanese language course, consisting of approximately 18-20 classroom hours per week. The summer program runs from June 1st through the first full week in August. Intensive Japanese language is taught at four different levels, from beginning to advanced. No prior Japanese language study is necessary. Japanese language courses are 10 credits, covering a standard academic year's worth of material in nine weeks. This course is often considered the most challenging at JCMU and students in this course must be prepared to devote ample time outside of the classroom to study. Placement tests given at the beginning of the program are used to determine the appropriate level for each student. More information on the four levels may be found on the Japanese Language Program Academic page. Beyond classroom training, JCMU students are able to apply their increasing language skills in the local community and throughout Japan. Field trips, demonstrations, and other activities, whether organized by the JCMU staff or initiated by students, complement language study.

Eligibility Requirements
Students must be in good academic standing with a GPA of at least 2.5 at the time of application and must have completed two semesters at the college level before the program begins. JCMU's language courses are intensive and require a strong work ethic in order to succeed. Meeting this minimum GPA does not, however, guarantee acceptance: additional eligibility criteria do apply, as outlined below. Students are evaluated in a number of areas during the application review process, and acceptance to JCMU is based on the program coordinator's review of the student's transcript, Personal Essay, Dean of Students Reference Form, and Faculty Recommendations. Applications from JCMU Consortium university students are given priority and evaluated for acceptance throughout the year. Applications from non-Consortium students are dated upon being received, and reviewed starting on the appropriate application deadline. Applications from our Affiliate institutions will be given admission priority over those from non-Consortium and non-Affiliate institutions. Applications received after the deadline (regardless of home institution) will be reviewed on a first-come first-serve basis. While accepted students will be admitted for their entire intended period of stay, this acceptance may be revoked for subsequent semesters based on the student's academic performance and behavior as determined by the Resident Director, Program Coordinator, and/or Language Program Coordinator.
