The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme invites university graduates from overseas to participate in international exchange and foreign language education throughout Japan. Participants are invited to Japan as representatives of their countries, and are therefore expected to demonstrate a sense of responsibility in all their activities, especially those concerning the promotion of mutual understanding between nations.
All applicants must attend the pre-departure orientation, and the post-arrival orientation. JET participants are placed in a total of about 1,200 contracting organizations (local boards of education, local governments, etc.) based on the requests received from contracting organizations and successful applicants.
There are three different types of positions; Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), Coordinator for International Relations (CIR), and Sports Exchange Advisor (SEA).
hold a Bachelor's degree in any subject by July of the year of departure
be a citizen of the country where the recruitment and selection procedures take place
have excellent skills in the designated language (both written and spoken). (For English-speaking countries this is English, and for non-English speaking countries it is the principal language)
have a keen interest in the country and culture of Japan
in principle, be under 40 years of age
not have lived in Japan for 3 or more of the last 8 years, nor be a former participant in the programme for the last 10 years.
